National Hispanic Heritage celebrations started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon B. Johnson, and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30 day period (source: Library of Congress Endowment for the Humanities)

Hispanics and Substance Abuse, en breve:

  • Among people aged 12 or older who were in need of treatment, Hispanics were less likely than non-Hispanics to receive treatment.
  • Among Hispanics needing but not receiving treatment, only 5.6% perceived a need for treatment
  • US-born Hispanic males report higher use rates and dependence than Hispanics born outside the US. 
  • Older Hispanics are less likely to abuse drugs.
  • Hispanic males use and abuse illicit drugs at higher rates than Hispanic females.
  • Preferred drugs: alcohol, opiates, and Rohypnol.
